Designer Spotlight – Steve Madden

Sloan Tichner: President, Handbags

Renee Cohen: President, Belts

Booth: 220

What is one of your key items for this upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 season?

Renee: Stretch belts continue to be strong. Color is key in belts for spring, and cleaner silhouettes with hardware treatments add newness to this continuing trend.  Skinny belts with a twist are still working by adding color with slight embellishment to make it look fresh.

Sloan: Our Social Tote is going to be huge. We just updated it again in lizard and snake; the look is so clean and contemporary! It has already proven to be a volume driver for many of our accounts.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Renee: Our design team works closely with our counterparts in shoes and handbags and draw inspiration from the runway, trend and leather shows, as well as European influences.

Sloan: Steve Madden as a brand is always on the cutting edge of fashion and trending is a constant process. Inspiration comes from everywhere! We always have a pulse on street fashion, the entertainment industry and key trends coming out of Europe andAsia.

How do you start the design process when creating a new collection?

Renee: We rework key belt silhouettes and then develop the color palette. Then we incorporate trends from the runway and magazines.

Sloan: We work really closely as a team and our designers are incredibly tuned into what our customers want. We also draw from our own retail stores which are an amazing source of information when we are laying out our key trends and items for the upcoming season.

What do you think will draw retailers to your collection this upcoming season?

Renee: Retailers will be drawn to the fact that we look fresh with cleaner lines and updated silhouettes that marry back to the RTW trends happening for Spring. Color is especially key this season.

Sloan: Our current collection is really strong with retailers and our valued accounts are looking to expand their business with us. We are offering a great collection of fashion silhouettes and our trends are spot on!

What is your personal fashion philosophy?

Renee: I keep my clothing simple but accessorize whenever I can – accentuating the waist is key.

Sloan: Fashion will always be a moving target. For me it is about being comfortable in your own skin, infusing fashion trends into one’s own sense of style and rocking them. Finding confidence from appropriate looks that work for you is really important, especially as we get older!

What three items are essential to you during market week?

Renee: Steve Madden shoes, my iPhone and Starbucks.

Sloan: My Steve Madden Annie booties, a liter of sparkling water, and my camera (I love to take photos of everyone on the street).
