What is one of your key items for this upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 season?
Squaw is the key item for Dandy this upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 season. An eye-catching adornment like the Squaw can be worn in at least seven different ways. Squaw works well with the collective wrist decorations that are now so popular. It’s uniquely wearable with many styles, making it a smart, versatile selection that’s sexy for women of all ages in a delicate, Dandy way.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Creative inspiration for Dandy comes from the perception and experience of my environment, as well as the feelings and thoughts associated with this process. Lines, patterns, and the way they play with each other feed my creative appetite. How colors connect and blend with each other, how elements mingle and fuse with shapes and forms – this is artistic to me.
How do you start the design process when creating a new collection?
The way Dandy’s eclectic, creative styles come to me is both random and sublime. Inspired by elements as disparate as post-it note sketches to mistakes in the kiln or even doodled recipe books, Dandy often arrives mysteriously. There’s a rolodex of ideas that flip and whirl in my mind, and if I’m lucky, one makes its way through my hands and into a piece of clay.
What do you think will draw retailers to your collection this upcoming season?
Dandy is an accessory that retailers get excited about, along with their customers. They’re not just sending over a style number and unit quantity purchase – each order becomes unique and special in a genuine, handcrafted way. Dandy is ever-evolving, following its natural personality with feedback received from clients and retailers. Buyers engage with Dandy’s original concept and gain more than just another accessory or adornment line for their stores.
If you could dress a celebrity who you feel fits your product image, who would it be and why?
Dandy is so much of a subjective, personal, almost ethereal choice when it comes to style and fashion. If I chose a few celebrities that Dandy blends with, I would say Dakota Fanning for her fearless youth, Olivia Wilde for her bold sexiness, and Esperanza Spalding for her seemingly infinite creativity. They personify what Dandy represents.
What is your personal fashion philosophy?
My personal fashion philosophy is bohemian, sexy and effortless sensuality with patterns that complement my funky side. It has to be comfortable, and it’s got to be one-of-a-kind.
What three items are essential to you during market week?
Market week is such an energetic time. Whole Food’s Oatmeal helps me wake up in the morning, a busy Dandy booth keeps me focused and productive, and a cozy hotel in Manhattan frees me from fatigue with friendly, peaceful recovery.
